NYC Marathon Cancellation Runs into Trouble

Mar 8th, 2013

According to a letter the organization recently released to runners, about half of everyone signed up for the 2012 run chose a refund.

Allowing runners to choose between a refund and future registration is a convenient solution, but it translates into less spots for other runners in the NCY Marathon for the next three years in a row. According to the NYRR’s letter, participants who have run 15 or more NYC marathons, do charity work, are international participants, have been denied three times in the past, run nine Road Runners races this year, or meet the time qualification will be accommodated.

But the number of time qualifiers admitted will be smaller than in years past. “Given our field-size limits, the number of entrants drawn will depend on the number of guaranteed entrants,” Mary Wittenberg, NYRR CEO, admits.

Registration for the 2013 NYC Marathon will be open from April 24 to May 24 of this year.
